“Waterfall” by Debra Samdperil – SOLO EXHIBITION AWARD

My painting has become a daily practice of self-preservation, realization, experimentation and raw expression, engaging both my mind & body. I’m discovering and at times confirming more about my world – with each failed and successful attempt at making. I work in landscapes, escapes, and exploratory scapes. Always challenging, I strive to expand visual and textural relationships that articulate my world beyond what I can express through other forms of communication. I draw from the moment and my always evolving thoughts and memories.

I begin each piece with both trepidation and excitement. Trying out new materials and fresh ways of working with them, I aim to stay loose, open and patient by working on multiple paintings simultaneously. My unconscious dictates but includes an engaged battle with conscious thoughts- inevitable layering, moving, building, scraping, removing, replacing, adding anew until I’m able to breathe in a new space.
