“Untitled” by Austin Cullen

In my ongoing project, I question the reality and truth of this history by juxtaposing various representations of western iconography. Photographs of dioramas stand in for actual, natural spaces, and actual, natural spaces stand in for dioramas. This reversal asks the question; what is real or not real? I also extend this approach to representations of the frontier; photographs of cowboy impersonators, wild west paraphernalia, man-made structures within wilderness, and degrading murals depicting an idealized landscape. Photographs in this context point out the seams of our constructed history, bringing to the surface the false front of the American West.
