Scratching the Surface: A Sgraffito Workshop

October 27 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm

Join Jennifer Evans Arbo for a surface design and sgraffito carving workshop. Sgraffito means to “scratch” in Italian and workshop participants will draw and carve a design onto a plate shape of their choosing. Sgraffito involves removing layers of slip or underglaze from greenware to reveal the underlying clay body.

Jennifer will demonstrate how she seeks out design inspiration, and how she applies 2-D design concepts to 3-D surfaces using the sgraffito method.

After a short demonstration of Jennifer’s sgraffito process, participants will be provided with an ornament to practice and a slab plate to complete their project (made prior to the workshop by Jennifer). Participants will use underglazes and slips on their greenware ceramic piece during the session as they explore the sgraffito practice themselves.

One ornament and one 10″ plate is included in the workshop.

Participants can choose designs provided by Jennifer or draw their own!

No experience required.

All materials will be provided for during the workshop

Please bring reference images if you have an idea of what you would like to sgraffito.

Tuition: Members $77/ Non-Members $102
