200-Portrait Drawing

Students will learn how to create a likeness through observation. The structure of the human head, proportion, facial features, and rendering form will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on expressive line quality, and understanding the figure in terms of volume and form. Various dry media will be explored including graphite, vine charcoal and conte crayon. Demonstrations will be provided.

This class will be taking place online using Zoom. Instructions on how to access the class will be sent the Friday before the class start date.

Materials

Most of the following supplies may be purchased at any art supply store. Start with what you already have. Not all materials are needed for the first day. If you have any questions, please contact the instructor at [email protected].

Paper (students may work on white, or colored paper, or both):
Charcoal/Pastel pads (11 x 14", 12 x 16", or 18 X 24")
assorted colors for graphite or charcoal and/or individual sheets
Graphite Pencils: 2B, B, HB, H, 2H or Mechanical pencils (.5mm and/or .9mm- HB, F, H, 2H, 4H)
Charcoal Pencils: Assorted grades (General's and/or Pitt)
Vine/Willow charcoal sticks
White Charcoal (for working with colored paper):
White charcoal pencil (General's and/or Pitt)
General's white drawing stick

General Items:
Plumbline: Make one of straight dark thread and a nail (or other small object)
Viewfinder: Make one of shirt cardboard or the back of a legal pad. Make 2 "L" shapes, about 7" on the leg and 1.5" wide. Use 2 paper clips to attach.
Knitting needle (a thin one #0,1,or 2) or bamboo skewer
Single-edge razor blade or small utility knife with retractable blade (for sharpening pencils)
Sandpaper
black Binder/bankers clips
Artist tape
Erasers
Kneaded eraser
Pink pearl eraser
Boards Sketch board or foam board (large enough for 18 x 24"- or cut a little larger than paper size)

An alumnus of Pratt Institute and The Art Students League of NY. Studied with leading realist painters as Max Ginsberg and Nelson Shanks, teaches at The Art Students League, NYC and gives private lessons. Award winning portrait artist; exhibits in NY, NJ and Connecticut galleries.
