SUMMARY:Scratching the Surface: A Sgraffito Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Jennifer Evans Arbo for a surface design and sgraffito carving workshop. Sgraffito means to “scratch” in Italian and workshop participants will draw and carve a design onto a plate shape of their choosing. Sgraffito involves removing layers of slip or underglaze from greenware to reveal the underlying clay body.  \nJennifer will demonstrate how she seeks out design inspiration\, and how she applies 2-D design concepts to 3-D surfaces using the sgraffito method.  \nAfter a short demonstration of Jennifer’s sgraffito process\, participants will be provided with an ornament to practice and a slab plate to complete their project (made prior to the workshop by Jennifer). Participants will use underglazes and slips on their greenware ceramic piece during the session as they explore the sgraffito practice themselves.  \nOne ornament and one 10″ plate is included in the workshop. \nParticipants can choose designs provided by Jennifer or draw their own!  \nNo experience required. \nAll materials will be provided for during the workshop \nPlease bring reference images if you have an idea of what you would like to sgraffito. \nTuition: Members $77/ Non-Members $102

It’s quick\, it’s experimental\, it has texture\, with limitless possibilities and a sense of playfulness. There’s no time to be thoughtful or spend time on tiny details or correct mistakes (not to say\, we won’t try\, but if we can’t correct\, we embrace!). Big swoopy movements\, quick decisions and use of found objects is what this workshop is going to be all about. \nTuition: Members $41/Non-Members $66 \nAbout the Instructor \nSmriti Sangal is a multidisciplinary Visual Artist and an Art Educator with a teaching experience of over 10 years with kids and adults of all ages. SUMMARY:Christine Sauerteig-Pilaar: To Bare Witness
DESCRIPTION:Opening: Friday\, April 5 from 6-8pm \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n  \nChristine Sauerteig-Pilaar is a contemporary artist living and working in New Jersey. Her compelling and emotional artworks look to speak to the primitive side of the human existence and how that relates to modern day life. Sauerteig-Pilaar focuses on the female form as her muse\, mostly conjured from self-portraits\, where she utilizes her body to manipulate feelings of a quiet rage within women in the more domestic interiors of lives not usually viewed as remarkable or unique. She works to search out the uniting thread of feminism in the dark spaces of suburban life\, and looks to thrust the spotlight on the unsaid struggles and betrayals of women in our current society. \nSauerteig-Pilaar received her BFA from Parson’s School of Design in 1993\, and after living in New York City\, relocated to New Jersey where she has continuously experimented with mediums that led to the eclectic mixed media paper constructions she is most notably recognized for. Her work has been showcased and celebrated in galleries and museums across the country. She was awarded the Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation residency in Jersey City\, NJ in 2022. \nClick Here to Read Christine Sauerteig-Pilaar’s Artist Statement
