SUMMARY:Spring Solo Exhibitions: Tracy DiTolla // Steven Epstein // Gregory Hennen
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition showcasing the work of our three 2022 International Juried Exhibition Solo Exhibition Award winners.\nOpening: Friday\, April 21\, 2023 from 6-8 p.m.\n\nTracy DiTolla: Tragic Flaws\n\n2022 International Juried Exhibition Solo Exhibition Award \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n\nTracy DiTolla received her BA in art history from William Paterson University\, her MA in art history and her MFA in studio art from Montclair University. Her current work is primarily done in oil on canvas and her influences include Baroque and Surreal art as well as film noir. \nShe currently resides in northern New Jersey and chairs the art and graphic design departments at Warren County College. She exhibits her work throughout New Jersey. \nClick here to read Tracy DiTolla’s Artist Statement\nLearn more about Tracy DiTolla \n\nSteven Epstein: The Pedestrian Absurd\n2022 International Juried Exhibition Solo Exhibition Award \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n\nSteven Epstein grew up in the New York area and now lives in New Jersey. He considers himself a semi-educated artist in that he’s taken classes at places like the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan but doesn’t have any degrees in art. He does much of his learning through work. To him painting is often an adventure in a search for meaning\, a record of a discourse between what’s going on inside and outside of him. His work often has a gritty feel reflecting an interest in noir and jazz. There are expressionist influences and boundary crossing between the representational and abstract. There is often an exploration of underlying patterns suggested in compositions involving heightened impressions\, atmosphere and mood of the seeming commonplace. Current work can include the additional use of collage materials to his acrylic painting. Lately he has been more intuitive and experimental as a result of the introspection from the current circumstances of his retirement coinciding with the restrictions of the past few years. \nEpstein was selected for a solo show at the Monmouth Museum for their 2014 Emerging Artist Series. He’s been part of dual artist shows at the Hamilton Street Gallery in 2016 (Road Work) and 2019 (Midnight Mercury). While working as an x-ray technician he had paintings on 7 covers of the trade magazine “Radiologic Technology” after being a winner in their cover contest. \nClick here to read Steven Epstein’s Artist Statement\nLearn more about Steven Epstein \n\nGregory Hennen: Where I Wander\n2022 International Juried Exhibition Solo Exhibition Award \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n\nGregory Hennen is a landscape painter whose work is inspired by his extensive time spent in nature which included 15 years as the property manager for Manitou Point Nature Preserve in Garrison\, NY. While there he was responsible for designing and maintaining over 4 miles of trails along the Hudson River property. He makes graphite sketches that are often followed by small gouache paintings in preparation for more complex oil paintings created in the studio. \nHe earned his BFA from Eastern Connecticut State University\, Willimantic\, CT. His work has been shown nationally\, including group exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art\, Huntsville Museum of Art\, University of Southern Mississippi and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences. His painting Ridge View Wyatt Mountain was selected for the cover of the 15th edition of The Bedford Reader. His work is in the public collections of Pfizer Inc.\, Greenwich Public Library\, Greenwich\, CT and in numerous private collections. The artist has been represented by Kenise Barnes Fine Art\, Kent\, CT since 2002. He lives and works in Virginia. \nClick here to read Gregory Hennen’s Artist Statement\nLearn more about Gregory Hennen \n\nFor more information on our accessibility services and gallery access\, please call us or visit our accessibility webpage.

It is my attempt to bring into relief the issues of gender bias\, political violence and discrimination against women. In creating a body of work that confronts the dehumanization of women I also confront a system that dehumanizes me as a man who is Black.” — Victor Davson \nClick Here to Read Victor Davson’s Complete Artist Statement \nVictor Davson has exhibited widely throughout the northeast United States and in Great Britain\, France\, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. His work is in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts\, Havana\, Cuba\, National Collection of Fine Arts\, Guyana\, Newark Museum of Art\, Montclair Art Museum\, New Jersey State Museum\, Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum\, and Morris Museum. Fellowships and awards include a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant\, a Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper Fellowship\, three New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship Awards.  \nDavson was born in Georgetown\, the Capitol of what was then British Guiana. He received a BFA degree from Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, New York and cofounded Aljira\, a Center for Contemporary Art to support artists outside the mainstream. His thinking is heavily influenced by the anti-colonial politics of the Caribbean\, and by the intellectual powerhouses of that period. \nClick Here to Read Victor Davson’s Complete Biography \nDr. Cynthia Hawkins is an abstract painter and scholar whose research encompasses race\, identity\, early African American art history\, and theory. SUMMARY:Beneath the Surface
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 30\, 2022 – December 9\, 2022\nOpening Reception: Friday\, September 30\, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. \nNortheast Feltmakers Guild Juried Exhibition\nJURORS: Wes Sherman and Patricia Spark \nEXHIBITING ARTISTS: Sibel Adali\, Leslie Alexander\, Colette Ballew\, Marsha Biderman\, Robin Blakney-Carlson\, Josephine Dakers-Brathwaite\, Judith M. Daniels\, Linda Doucette\, Lyn Falcone\, Susan Getchell\, Rae Gold\, Carol Ingram\, Kerstin Katko\, Denise Kooperman\, Helene Kusnitz\, LadyK\, Cathy M. Ryan\, Sibel Adali\, Linda Tomkow\, Rae Gold\, Nancy Winegard\, Kerstin Katko\,\nRachel Montroy\, Susan Getchell \n“My first exposure to the medium of felt came through Joseph Beuys’ art\, and his many uses of felt (e.g. “Felt Suit\,” “Plight\,” and “Sled”)\, as well as Robert Morris’ industrial felt abstract sculptures. This early exposure\, more than twenty years ago\, helped me see wool\, and other soft materials\, as a medium for rigorous artistic exploration. \nThe submissions for this exhibition presented many wonderful uses of felt. The first time through the entries I looked at everything and then took a long break—returning the next day. At that point\, I selected the work that had stayed with me from the previous day. The next review was more difficult. I had to eliminate several really good works to fit the limited space within the gallery.  At this point in the process\, I asked myself: how does each piece relate to the term “contemporary” in the Center’s name? I considered how the medium and the composition work together to support the artist’s vision; how the objects contribute to the art community at large and to works in other media that are dealing with similar concepts.”\n— Wes Sherman \nClick Here to Read Wes Sherman’s Complete Juror Statement \nWes Sherman has been an artist for nearly 30 years. His 45 solo exhibitions include a show at Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton and at Johnson and Johnson’s Global Headquarters Gallery. He has been in hundreds of group exhibitions. He is the Curator and Chair of Exhibitions at The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster\, NJ. He has been a frequent visiting artist at universities and schools and is regularly asked to lead art programs for organizations and clubs. An adjunct professor\, Sherman teaches at William Paterson University and Raritan Valley Community College. He received his MFA at Rutgers University\, where he studied with his mentor Tom Nozkowski. \nPatricia Spark is the author of “The Watercolor Felt Workbook-A Guide To Making Pictorial Felt”\, “Making Faces\, Using Wet and Dry Felting Methods”\, “Fundamentals of Feltmaking”\, and “Scandinavian Style Feltmaking.” She has taught internationally in Bishkek\, Kyrgyzstan; Lakitelek\, Hungary; Tbilisi\, Republic of Georgia; Petajavesi\, Finland; and in Korrö\, Sweden. In addition\, she has taught at several regional and national fiber conferences throughout North America.  Pat was the editor of the felt publication\, the North American Felter’s’ Network and for many years\, she was on the boards of various textile organizations such as HGA\, ANWG\, Weaving Guilds of Oregon (WeGO) and the Corvallis Handweavers and Spinners Guild.  Now Pat is happily creating her art and exhibiting as part of Gallery Calapooia in Albany\, OR.

The variety and range of entries is a testament to the diversity and creativity of The Center’s community of artists. This year’s works of art by 91 participating members include painting\, pastel\, charcoal\, ink\, graphite\, photography\, mixed media\, ceramics and more. \nJudge: M’kina Tapscott \n“All the members’ works were inspired\, and executed with such great craftsmanship and detail. I could see the hours of attention\, and felt the love and dedication that went into creating the variety of paintings\, drawings\, sculptures and ceramics. Many of these pieces used vibrant colors and a variety of lines to explore nature\, memories\, folk art\, science\, and religion. \nVarious themes and stories began to unravel each time I viewed the works. I could see the use of layers of multiple colors to create interesting textures and organic shapes and depth. The balance of color and contrast contributed to the captivating mood\, as many of the works were dreamlike and mysterious. In the portraits\, although the expressions in the characters are calm and the images are static\, there is a sense of energy and movement captured in the whimsical and brave figures. With so many great pieces to choose between\, it was tough making this decision.” — M’kina Tapscott \nM’Kina Tapscott has a fifteen year career in education\, access\, curation and advocacy. Beginning with her work as Director of Education and Programs at Project Row Houses\, an art and social service development in Houston\, TX\, and continuing through education and outreach positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft\, Tapscott has championed the primacy of art in building community and advancing social change.  Concurrent with her curatorial and administrative work\, Tapscott has taught art history and studio art at all levels– most recently at the University of Houston and Houston Community College.  A practicing artist\, she holds an MFA from the University of Houston and a BFA from Texas State University.

SUMMARY:Debra Samdperil: Layered Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: April 22\, 2022 – June 4\, 2022\nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 22\, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. \n2021 International Juried Exhibition Solo Exhibition Award \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n\nDebra Samdperil‘s painting explores current and past personal stories through engaged discovery\, both unconscious and intentional – always questioning whether self-determination is possible. She works from her studio in South Boston where she now has the opportunity for time and focus more exclusively on her practice. An artist from early on\, she watched and learned from her mother as she painted.  Her mother also exposed her to numerous artists’ work taking her to many art museums long before she even understood what she was seeing. Debra’s professional life has always focused on the visual arts. From years as a photographer and video producer to numerous positions in art education at colleges and community programs both in Boston and NYC\, she always has been drawing in one form or another. Debra earned a BFA from Tufts\, SMFA and has exhibited work and participated in residencies ever since.  Most recently she has been deeply engaged in regular critiques and discussions with numerous artists both in NY and Internationally via the Yellow Chair Salon based in Brooklyn\, NY & Truro\, MA (and on Zoom). \nClick Here to Read Debra Samdperil’s Artist Statement \nLearn more about Debra Samdperil

Architectural spaces and forms inspire Wolf’s artwork. Using these forms as a metaphor for the human experience\, his work explores the dichotomies of protection vs. vulnerability. Material integrity is an essential aspect of Wolf’s artwork. He chooses the materials for each work carefully so that it speaks to the essence of the piece. The artist uses wood\, stone\, metal\, and gold leaf while incorporating technologies such as 3D printing creating contemporary art with an ongoing dialogue with history.  \n \nWolf is represented by Monica King Projects. His exhibitions with Monica King Projects include Spring to Action\, Wish You Were Here\, participating in a designer showcase in the penthouse at 100 Franklin\, and exhibiting online in the Intersect Chicago/SOFA Fair. Wolf recently completed a residency at Mana Contemporary sponsored by the Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation\, where his focus was on drawing and works on paper. He received individual fellowship grants from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the NJ State Council of the Arts and received the Power of Art Award\, personally presented to him by Robert Rauschenberg.
