I like to use synthetic brushes as well.  Kingart Original Gold Brushes  rounds and flats, escoda-perla-toray-white-synthetic  I like the Escoda Perla 1/4” flat. It’s a stiff brush that’s good for lifting.

Paper: Good paper will take you a long way towards a satisfying watercolor experience. A few small sheets of high quality paper or 140 lb. 9 x 12” cold press block. https://www.dickblick.com/products/arches-watercolor-blocks/.

Arches, Fabriano and Saunders Waterford are excellent brands.
