136-Oil Painting

Students will work from a mix of sources, including photos, still-life setups, plein-air sketches, and live subjects, while exploring a range of oil painting methods and techniques. Artist and instructor Wes Sherman will guide you through approaches that strengthen your understanding of composition, color, and form while also supporting your personal creative direction.

This class welcomes all experience levels. You are encouraged to bring and use the oil painting supplies you already have. A suggested materials list is included below for anyone who would like added guidance.

Class Level: Adults and Teens 16+, all levels welcome.

Materials

Paints
Start with a limited palette and avoid student-grade paints.
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow or Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Red
Cobalt Blue (hue) or Ultramarine Blue
Ivory Black

Brushes
Assorted filbert bristle brushes in sizes two through eight
Assorted round soft brushes in sizes two through eight

Medium
Linseed oil
Artist-quality odorless mineral spirits (OMS)

Painting Palette
Choose one of the following
Masonite
Plexiglass
Glass
Disposable wax paper

Painting Surface
Canvas or canvas panel primed with acrylic gesso
No smaller than eight by ten and no larger than fourteen by seventeen

Miscellaneous
Drop handle painting knife
Palette cups (or a water jar if you are working in acrylic)
Cotton rags and or paper towels

 


About the Instructor

Wes Sherman

Artist Wes Sherman has been painting since 1992 and has been included in hundreds of exhibitions across the county and Europe.. He received his MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2003. Sherman has been a visiting artist at many universities and the recipient of a fellowship for painting from New Jersey Council of the Arts. For the past 15 years Sherman has focused on landscape painting, in particular en plein air painting.He is the chair of exhibitions at The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, New Jersey.
